Gun Control
Gun control is a law or policy to regulate firearms of selling, possessing, or manufacturing the firearms. Gun control limits civilians to have guns, and prevent the crimes that involves firearms, or some accident shooting. The restriction of gun controls varies in different countries, some countries have less restrict laws for gun controls, but some have restrict gun controls. In America, the laws of gun control are less restricted respected to other countries. The debates between if the government should have restricted gun controls or less are debatable, and the debates of gun control involve political factors and citizens perspectives. Gun controls bring both advantages and disadvantages to our society, and the government also faces many obstacles to promulgate the laws of gun controls.
The history of gun control can be traced back to 1934, the case of Bonnie and Clyde. Two thieves robbed banks and killed people with firearms. In 1938, Roosevelt approvals the National Firearms Act, the law states the gun dealers must to have licenses and must record each of their transactions. And the Gun Control Act of 1968 prohibits drug users and people who have mentally problems to possess firearms. In the year 1986, an amendment was passed and forbidding civilians to own machine guns produced after May 19, 1986. And then the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act of 1993 needs gun purchasers to complete background checks through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. In the following year, the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 made the government to ban the production of new semi-automatic assault guns, and limits the max capacity of the bullets. In 2005, President Bush passed the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, and the law protects gun dealers from being held responsible when crimes have been committed with their products. And after the shooting of Newtown, President Obama tried to impose more limitations on gun controls.
Although many debates about the gun control laws, the laws of gun control have their advantages. Having strict gun control would decrease the chances that the criminals to do massive shooting. After a criminal rob a store or bank, he will be threatened if the victims are firearm holders, and so the victims might defend themselves with guns. Then the criminal might kill all the victims that look like to have guns in an act of self-defense. And the people who do not appear as a threat to have guns might escape without gunshot from the criminal. More gun control also leads to fewer suicides. If the government has strict gun control laws, the laws will make it difficult for people to hold guns, so that people cannot kill themselves easily. Having guns makes both murders and suicides very easy. Gun control can also avoid kids to have access to guns even if their parents legally own the guns. Kids will have less chances to get into deadly acts or deadly accidents. Moreover, according to procon.org, five women are murdered by guns every day in America. A 2003 study of 23 high income countries showed in America 83% women who has been killed were by guns, and American women have 11 times more chance to be killed by guns than those countries.
Gun controls also bring many disadvantages to the society. First of all, if the gun was banned in America, the criminals will always find a way to acquire guns. Guns can be trade through black markets and bootleggers, and people can make their weapons. In that case, the victims will not have firearms to protect themselves from the criminals from getting robbed or killed. And guns also act as threat for criminals because they would be afraid of the victims to have guns to self-defense. Without guns, the criminals may escape freely after a crime. The gun control laws also forbid people to hunt. In contemporary society, more people like to hunt with guns, and hunting becomes the part of their lives. If the law bans the guns, they will no longer be able to hunt. The gun controls also will give government too much powers because the government takes all the guns from citizens. The purpose of citizens to have guns is to limit the over powered government in the Second Amendment. A radio host Alex Jones said “the Second Amendment isn't there for duck hunting, it's there to protect us from tyrannical government and street thugs… 1776 will commence again if you try to take our firearms!". According to procon.org, the strict gun control cannot prevent crimes because Mexico has strict gun control, so it will not work in America. In 2002, Mexico had 11309 gun murders, and America had 9146 gun murders and there were only one legal gun stores in Mexico. The more efficient way to reduce gun kills is to educate people instead of banning guns.
When considering the gun control using functionalist perspective, both advantages and disadvantages to the society should be compared. America has less strict gun controls, and people can buy gun after they pass the background checks. People who have guns will have more prepare for accident to happen. Strict gun controls can prevent people to hurt or kill other people using guns. Guns should be used to maintain society stability and order. However, guns not only protect people, but also bring threat and violence to society.
